John Woo and his films
The film “The
Killer” is the most perfect work in John Woo his life and he could not be available
to beyond this work during his whole life. It is not only a classic action film
but also including romantic and responsible. It shows us a lot of feelings and
psychological changes from the characters in this film. John Woo is a humane person;
He puts ties of friendship in a really important place in his heart. We can see
all his personality traits in this film.
Ah Jong is a killer,
his job is to kill the person his boss gave to him and got money back. However,
once in his mission, he accidently hurt Jennie’s eyes and she became blind. He
thought it is his responsibility and planned to take care of her until she can
see things. Also, when Ah Jong finished his mission and escaped to a island, he
was hunted that time and gunfight broke out. A little girl was shot innocently,
Ah Jong carried her to the hospital even the police followed closely by him. I don’t
think a professional killer could have so many feelings to other and help them
so much. I believe it represents director’s personality trait. Fung Sei is the
man gave Ah Jong information about the mission and money when he finishes the mission;
also they were good friends in 13 years. However, Ah Jong’s boss did not want
to give the money and let Fung Sei kill him. Ah Jong found that out but he did
not plan to kill him, he still treats him as his best friend. Fung Sei did not live
up Ah Jong’s trust and made the money back. I think it also represent Joho Woo
himself from another side. Even he was tricked, he still trusts his friends, and
shows respect and give them chance to proof themselves. Ah Jong as one of the
main actors in this film, he showed his unyielding spirit to us. He never gave
up even when he was deceived by friends, wanted by the police and hunted by
gang. The only purpose he wants is to treat Jennie well and take care of her. It
also shows what exactly kind of person John woo is. From this film, we can see
nothing can measure friendship, sympathetic arena brothers and their unshakable
principle of life.
In 1971s, John Woo
followed the most famous action movie director Chang Che at that time. John Woo
studied a lot of professional skills from him. In his word, “if we exchange the
knives to guns in Chang Che’s films, it will be like my film “A better tomorrow”.1
however, although we know John Woo is a famous action film director, he
directed many comedies at first ten years from 1971s to 1983s. After 1983s, it
was a big challenging to him; also it was his career trough. He was sent to
Taiwan and was not allowed to direct films. He did not give up his dream, he
made lots of friends and tell the difference between films in Taiwan and Hong
Kong. He started to some films form Japan, Europe and United State America. He
gets lots of inspiration from kurosawa, who is the most famous director in
Japan. When he studied the films form the USA, David Samuel Peckinpah and Stanley
Kubrick gave him new idea about violence. John Woo always wanted to make
gangster films but no one support him until 1986s; he directed “A better tomorrow”
successfully with the help of Chang Che. This film has laid a John Woo film
style aesthetic of violence. “A Better Tomorrow” is not only a turning point in
John Woo’s life, but also a monument of Hong Kong films. This big scenes,
high-quality works shocked all the audiences and filmmakers. At the same time, the
film has also found a large number of Hong Kong film talents, such as Tsui
Hark, Chow Yun Fat and Leslie. In 1989s, “The Killer” is probably the most
important representative of the life of John Woo. In 1993, John Woo started his
Hollywood life and in 1997s,2 he directed the film “ FACE/OFF”,
which is the John Woo film industry another peak. He found Eastern andWestern
